Boot Usb Macbook Pro 2011

Is there a way to Bootcamp Windows 7 from USB on a MacBook Pro (early 2011) that has had the Optical Drive replaced with a HDD. I have a copy of Windows on DVD, and an ISO from MS website (which I installed on my 2013 iMac).
I've read conflicting views on whether it's possible. I've tried using the DVD with a Samsung External DVD Drive but it isn't recognised.
Will an Apple Super Drive work? Do I need to force the EFI to accept the USB or has this been stopped in Mavericks?
If anyone in the same situation has successfully completed this task, please, tell me how.
Thanks in advance.
